home SMALL HYDROPOWER GENERATION IN THE ALPINE REGION

The Second Report on the State of the Alps highlited the presence within the Alpine perimeter of an high number of facilities already in place as well as their considerable impacts on ecology of waters. Nevertheless the Alpine perimeter as a whole still provides technical potential for further hydropower generation.

Based on the recommendations of the Second Report on the State of the Alps, the X Alpine Conference (Evian, 2009) established a Platform on "Water Management in the Alps"; one of the main goals of the Platform is the realization of a "report" on "small hydropower in the Alpine Space" and, based on it, work out"common guidelines on the use of small hydropower" including good practice examples.

The Situation Report on Hydropower Generation in the Alpine Region focusing on Small Hydropower provides substantial background information on hydropower (with a focus on small hydropower) and gives the basis to set the scene and elaborate the “Common Guidelines for the Use of Small Hydropower in the Alpine Region” mandated by the X Ministerial Conference of the Alpine Conference in Evian, March 2009.
